Congratulations to the WCHS Work-Based Learning Student of the Month, Ashley Edwards. Ashley Edwards is this school year’s first Work-Based Learning employee of the month for December! Ashley is a senior who works as a media specialist assistant for our school’s library. Ashley’s supervisor, Mrs. Evans, stated “Ashley will make an excellent employee. She epitomizes all the characteristics desired in a 21st century worker.” Ashley’s career goal is to become a registered nurse. Work-Based Learning is designed to connect academic and occupational curriculum to the workplace, in which students are able to work in a career related pathway while earning school credit. For a student to qualify to participate in the work-based learning program, a student must be a junior or senior and have a defined career pathway. Currently, our school offers three career pathways: agriculture, business and computer science, and healthcare. Work-based learning students must also be in good academic standing, have a good discipline record, and adhere to the school’s attendance policy. Please see Mrs. Williams for more information.

Crime Scene Investigations
Giving Thanks
Falling into a Good Book
WCMS Students become Crime Scene Investigators Students in the classes of Jessica Jones and Melanie Knight recently read Wanted! by Caroline Cooney. After the main character, Alice, was accused of killing her father, students visited the crime scene (recreated in the media center) and debated the clues to the murder. After a vigorous debate over clues presented in the book, students voted on who the actual killer was. Students used critical reading skills and upper level reasoning to become involved in the story. At the conclusion of the event, students worked in groups to write a conclusion to the story. The winning conclusion will be published in the Wheeler County High School Journalism Magazine, Insight. Here at WCMS we are creating a “culture of reading.” Research shows that “motivation, interest, and engagement are enhanced when teachers read aloud to middle school students,” according to specialist L. K. Albright. Teachers read aloud to students for 15 minutes each day. This has increased student engagement and enthusiasm for reading. Do you have a middle school student? If so, ask him or her about the class novels! The classes extend a special thank you to Mr. Phil Parker for being the “dead body,” Officer Ricky Collins for discussing investigations, Renae Evans for helping arrange the crime scene, and especially to Allison Oliver for portraying Alice and being a guest reader. Keep reading, everyone!
